General description of the collection: The cemeteries photograph collection consists of pictures of numerous United States (U.S.) military cemeteries in France, some established only days after the D-Day invasion of Europe. There are numerous aerial views and some ground views. The great impact is the visual image of the sacrifice for democracy as one views thousands of white crosses, both Christian and Jewish, representing the final resting place of a soldier. Also included is a series of photos of the transportation and dedication of the unknown service person from the Vietnam War at Arlington National Cemetery in 1984.
